I have a friend that can take any room- big or small, cluttered or empty and turn it into the most cohesive, relaxing and functional space. It's a gift I wish I had but unfortunately we can't be Everything, right??
But I do have an eye for a beautiful room when I see one and I feel it's a great quality to have when decorating!
Of course the matter of decorating is very subjective. You can read all you want in popular design magazines but ultimately it's up to YOU and your unique style so I encourage people to run with that! Run with YOUR likes and the things YOU personally enjoy (and your household). In my opinion, it's time we explore and play with what we like (actually finding out what we like because we may not even know since we're usually do persuaded by media).
Now after all that, I do have some tips on how to make your space more harmonious with the art you choose. Just don't make these tips lose yourself 😃
For the bedroom, you probably want it to be a place of rest and intimacy. In this way, I find it's good to have art that is intentionally meaningful to you, more than just something pretty. Get something that speaks to you. It's great for the colors within your art to be subtle and relaxing such as including muted greens and neutrals. Try to make it match your bedding somewhat.
For the dining room and kitchen I actually lean towards the opposite. I find its great to add splashes of color and vibrancy to these rooms to brighten them up! Maybe that's because I go straight from my bed to the kitchen in the morning and need a little wake up action!
I find it's best to either pick an art piece you love and make your decor match around it, or find what colors are dominant in your rooms and find paintings that have similar colors in order to draw them into the rest of the decor. Also if you have a lot of busy things going on already in a particular room, maybe try simple, minimalist style paintings. Or if you have a room that seems drab when you walk in, maybe try getting a painting that is like a show-stopper (something that brightens your mood every time you see it!). It's AMAZING what emotions can be evoked through art in the home!
For living rooms, I find it looks really good to have either a gallery of smaller framed paintings or one large one above the couch. People gather in the living room to talk and think about conversations so it's great to find pieces that create conversation!
And don't forget the entryway! Whether you have a small one or a grand one, think about how this is the first place people see when they walk in. Make that space count! I love to boast my favorite art in those spots!
Maybe next time I'll talk about the bathrooms, offices and kids rooms...
Thanks for taking the time to read and don't forget to comment!
